I Am Raising My Children

So, most of you know we home educate our kiddos. We know God has called us to it and will equip us to do it. I subscribe to a newsletter from Crosswalk.com called Home School Encouragement. I read an article this morning that really resonated with me. It is titled "I Was Raised By Wolves." Read it here.

The author has a very interesting blog. I have only read a few of her recent posts, but it's one that I have bookmarked. She has a lot of great info on what is going on in government schools as well as fun and useful links and encouraging words in regards to home education.
If your interested, click here to see it.

I know home education can be a controversial subject...and can make people uncomfortable. Sometimes it's good to feel uncomfortable ;) I apologize if I offend at all, but I feel passionately about parents taking responsibility for discipling their children. I am a Christ follower who seeks to lead my children to know God personally, to know what God has done in the past and is doing now, and to know what God is calling them to do in obedience to His word. To me that is of utmost importance. I am far from perfect when it comes to doing this, but my aim is in the right place. God's grace is evident daily in our home as He leads me, convicts me of sin and helps me to move forward in His strength.

Is it not possible to love completely and disciple our kids even if they attend public school? That's what I got out of those articles.

wow..I am not only offended as a mother of 3 children who go to public school but also as a person going to school to become a public school teacher. It's called parent involvement. You have to be the one to keep the school in check, talk to the teachers and talk to other parents.

Yes, I agree Lori, as a parent of kids in public school you can disciple them and love them completely...but you are not with them 100% of the time and you cannot possibly know what influence their friends and teachers have on them. My husband as well as countless others have made it through public school without much harm. I do apologize that I have offended you and know you love your kids no less than we love ours. I know you want the best for your children and that putting them in public school is what you feel God is leading you to do. I have many friends that have their kids in public school. I probably have offended them as well. But, hopefully, this will prompt thought, prayer and more parent involvement in the classroom. I'm all for that. Again, I apologize and hope you will still be friends!

i have an aunt who has been a public school teacher for over 25 years and is a wonderful lady. she has encouraged me to homeschool. aside from the points you made, our school system is run by the state, which dictates beyond even the classroom what is appropriate to learn and behavior that is in direct opposition to scripture. you don't EVEN want to know all the neat stuff I learned in high school! And I was homeschooled for 3 semesters for health reasons (just think of all the neat stuff i missed out on). for sure we need more christian teachers in our public school system. but it is my belief that God's best for the family is schooling at home. sometimes the family dynamic or situation necessitates sending kids to public school. parental involvement in this situation is crucial. however, my mom came against some crazy opposition from leadership at the public high school for making education decisions on behalf of my sister (education abroad for 2 weeks) that were well within the districts rules/regs. gotta watch out and not get too involved. woah, for a minute there she thought she was the parent. scary.
"involved" parents come against some big obstacles.

Hi Rose, you may not know who I am. My husband Willy knew Desi when we lived in Lake Elsinore. My sister Alayna remembers you from when she was younger and a part of the youth group at Calvary. I also use to work at Calvary for a couple years and knew your father-in-law. Anyways, I found your blog through the Calles blog and have been very inspired by you. I want to say thank you so much. You are so encouraging and inspiring. Willy and I have two little boys who won't be in school for awhile, but I have been debating with myself about homeschooling or public schools. I am leaning more and more towards homeschooling for the very reasons you mention. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure I'll keep reading your blog too, so it's nice to meet you virtually anyways! Thanks! Alison
