Home School Weekly Digest

Last week Hope continued to memorize Matthew 7:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." We painted rocks to remind us of our verse. The kids love paint. Look at Hope's tongue in this picture...she moves it around when doing art. So cute!

The finished product: Hope and my rocks:
For music Hope and I have been listening to this wonderful Biography in music and words on CD about Peter Tchaikovsky. Hope recognized the waltz from Sleeping Beauty as well as a few other pieces that she had heard on Fantasia. We listen to a lot of classical, but have not really studied any composers. It was fun to learn more about him and be able to recognize his work.

I also played the song Yankee Doodle Dandy for Hope and we learned about the history of the song. It's a funny song. We'll listen to it for another week or so to learn the words. Hope has already learned God Bless America and America.

We learned about George Washington this week as well. Hope and I made this tricorne hat, but Hope did not like it. Maybe it was the color. Emma's current favorite color is blue so she was very happy when Hope gave it to her. Now if I could only teach Hope to give away things that actually have value to her!
Our little revolutionaries!
We started a new book this week called Sarah Whitcher's Story by Elizabeth Yates. It's about w little girl (we are guessing she's 3 something) who gets lost in the woods. Hope is so cute...she always wants to read way more than what is scheduled and some days we do!
This is Hope's dictation from the book.

Hi Rose! The weekly logs are great! It is fun to see what is going on! Nevin's tongue does the same thing esp. during craft or art projects. It must be a concentration thing. We have some Classical Kids CDs which have a story about say Mozart with his music in the background told from a childs perspective. They are wonderful! So, how long is the school day? Does it end at a certain time or until the work is done? Can't wait to see you all in November! Lori

I think that there is some scientifict study about the tongue and activity. Jordan's comes out during art too! Our friend Connor is like a big puppy dog wagging all over the place while he is running.

I am so laughing about the tongues...how funny!

Lori...we are looking forward to seeing you too! For Hope, we start after lunch and it takes 2-3 hours depending on what is on the agenda, if there is extra activities or crafts, how long she chooses to take on different things, ect... Some things we will do half of and finish the next day. It works well for us this way this year. I'm sure next year will be different ;)

That's the nice thing about homeschooling -- you can work when the kids are at their best! We are morning workers! Nevin is up at 6:30am (no matter when he goes to bed) and ready to work! We are usually done by lunch or just do a project afterwards! thanks for the info Rose! Keep up the great work!
